Giant Ground Sloth Exhibit
Daytona Beach: The Impressive 13′ tall skeleton of the giant ground sloth (Eremotherium Laurillardi) was excavated in 1975 in an important Pleistocene Fossil site called the Daytona Bone Bed. Approximately 130,000 years ago, the Giant Ground Sloth lived in the coastal area of Florida, specifically in Volusia County. This huge, hairy mammal weighed between three to five tons and rose to the height of 15-20′ on its hind legs; was 5′ wide and about 20′ long. The Volusia County Giant Ground Sloth is the best preserved and most complete fossil of this species in North America. It has been home at The Center for Florida History at MOAS for 30 years. Audubon’s Birds of Florida Exhibit
Daytona Beach: This monumental achievement of both art and ornithology includes 435 prints by John James Audubon along with accompanying field notes documenting his six-month expedition to Florida in 1831-1832. Thanksgiving Gifts at the Lighthouse
Ponce Inlet: This fun Thanksgiving event is a great way to kick off the holiday season! In addition to the interesting workshops, and special programs, the museum is also hosting a special kids’ craft class where children can create their own “take-home” ornaments, crafted just like the children of the lighthouse keepers did 100 years ago. To make it feel all the more authentic, costumed docent re-enactors bring historic figures from the lighthouse’s past to life. Annual Christmas Boat Parade
Daytona Beach: Each year this holiday tradition is enjoyed by thousands lined along the Halifax River, on bridges, causeways and private boats to watch the boats parade along the Halifax River.
